Marcellus Shale Region Air Quality Could Suffer

According to Conrad Volz, Ph.D., director and principal investigator of University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Healthy Environments and Communities, residents in the Marchellus Shale region not only need to worry about pollutants in their water, but also about the air quality when toxins are released from the drill sites.

Volz says that flowback, a mixture containing naturally-occurring benzene, strontium and arsenic, can rise to the surface during the hydraulic fracturing (fracking) process and release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air.  Flowback is often held in open fracking ponds.

Chronic exposure to VOCs can impact an individual’s health.  Volz says that while VOCs from one drilling well is not an issue, the more wells drilled in the Marcellus Shale area the higher the potential for pollution and poor air quality leading to health issues for the residents.
